Electronic Resources , DATAD and Digital Repositories
Creating and Providing access to electronic information resources is one of the core functions of most Library Consortia, including MALICO.
There are several partners who assist in this process and give consortia in several low income countries heavily subsidized or donor funded access to a wide range of electronic resources.
Such organisations are eIFL (Open Society Initiative’s Electronic Information for Libraries Project), and INASP PERI Project. However, the objective is also to encourage consortia to mobilise some funding themselves for e-Resources and this is what MALICO has been doing since 2003 by collecting contributions from members. For 2007 MALICO raised from members approximately US$25000 towards e-resources. This has been forwarded to INASP PERI Programme.
Some of the e-Resources currently available through the negotiation process made available to MALICO through INASP, eIFL, WHO, FAO and Publishers’ initiatives are listed on the right. This list will vary according to the amount we collect from members.
MALICO partnered with AAU in 2010 as the Malawi input coordinator for the DATAD project, and received equipment and capacity building.
MALICO co-hosted with IAP (Irish African Partnership) and MAREN and eIFL a Digital Repository workshop in October 2009 bringining together information professionals and lecturing staff and others.
