Creating and Providing access to electronic information resources is one of the core functions of most Library Consortia, including MALICO.
Malawi Library and Information Consortium (MALICO), established on 7 May 2003 and registered as a Trust on 8th March 2004, clocked 11 years. MALICO‘s main objectives are: to encourage cooperation among information stakeholders; to influence information policy at the national level; to work for adequate ICT infrastructure for members, especially sufficient internet bandwidth; to assist in the development of appropriate ICT skills at all levels; to facilitate access to electronic journal articles in international databases; to organise and digitise Malawian content among other objectives.
Over the years, MALICO has united the information custodians of Malawi. The consortium has assembled and preserved indigenous information and provided access to that information in many formats for all Malawians. MALICO is a building block for effective libraries and harness scarce institutional resources. MALICO has changed the landscape of information services in Malawi. MALICO has developed an informed society through far-reaching programmes and services for teaching, learning and research, significantly contributing to the advancement of the social, political and economic environment in the continent. MALICO places a high value on resource sharing, cooperation and networking.
